The editor
Plotic's editor works with screenplay blocks. Each paragraph has a format, and the keyboard decides the next step so you do not need to open a menu for every line.
Available formats
| Format | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Scene | Headings such as INT. OFFICE - NIGHT. |
| Action | What we see and hear. |
| Character | The name introducing dialogue. |
| Dialogue | The words spoken by the character. |
| Parenthetical | A short direction inside a character block. |
| Transition | Changes such as CUT TO:. |
| Shot | Framing or camera directions. |
| Note | Working text outside the normal dialogue flow. |
Enter and Tab flow
- Scene moves to Action.
- Action continues with another Action line.
- Character moves to Dialogue.
- Character + Tab moves to Parenthetical.
- Parenthetical moves to Dialogue.
- Dialogue moves to Character.
When you type an opening parenthesis in an empty block, Plotic changes the block to Parenthetical and adds the closing one. Press Enter when you finish and the next block is ready for dialogue.
Character suggestions
As you type a character, Plotic searches the project's character index. If there is more than one match, use Up and Down to choose. Press Enter or Tab to complete the name and move to the next block.
When you confirm a new name at the end of the block, Plotic adds it to the project's character index. The interface displays names in uppercase while the source keeps the text you entered.
Sequence, character, and location profiles
Click a sequence, character, or location in the left sidebar to open its profile on the right. Profiles belong to the project and sync with the rest of the document.
- A sequence can have an alternate title, summary, story day, tags, color, present characters, and one arc beat per character.
- A character can include role, age, gender and pronouns, occupation, description, biography, objective, motivation, conflict, arc, strengths, weaknesses, and custom fields.
- A location can include its role, description, story function, atmosphere and visual detail, sound, history and geography, plus custom fields.
Renaming a character updates linked dialogue cues. When renaming a location, Plotic lets you update linked scene headings too or change only the profile. Profile data is included in a .plotic archive and is available as structured data for future MCP integrations; Plotic does not yet publish a remote MCP endpoint.
On desktop, drag the vertical edge of the left sidebar or right profile to change its width. Plotic stores the setting locally and keeps a minimum document area. On narrow screens, profiles open as an overlay.
Beat Board and scene order
Open Beat Board from the left sidebar to see written scenes and unwritten beats in one narrative order. Scene cards show their heading, alternate title, summary, story day, tags, characters, color, word count, and omitted state when those details exist. Use the search field to dim non-matching cards, and switch between detailed and compact density without changing the project.
Drag a card by its handle or use Move earlier / Move later. Moving a scene changes the screenplay itself, so the new order is also used by the treatment, exports, versions, and AI analysis. Unwritten beats keep their own position rather than travelling with a neighbouring scene. Click a scene card to edit its profile without leaving the board; choose Open in script to return to its text.
Scenes can also be reordered from the screenplay list in the sidebar. The arrow controls provide the same operation for keyboard and touch use. In writing mode scene numbers follow the new order. Production mode asks for confirmation and preserves locked scene numbers.
Comments
Comments are available on every plan. In Screenplay, select a passage and choose Comments → Add comment. With no selection, Plotic anchors the comment to the paragraph containing the cursor. Open threads are highlighted in the document and have a margin marker; select either one to open that thread in the right inspector.
People with edit access can reply, resolve, and reopen threads. Every message identifies its author, and only that author can edit it or delete a reply. The thread creator and project owner can delete the whole thread. The Resolved tab keeps closed conversations without filling the screenplay with markers.
Comments require a connection even though the screenplay remains editable offline. They are not screenplay text and are excluded from PDF, FDX, Fountain, .plotic files, and project versions.
Pagination and zoom
The bottom bar offers four separate tools:
- Two pages shows consecutive sheets as a vertical spread.
- Fit page recalculates zoom so the visible page fits the editor area.
- Fit width uses the available width as its reference.
- Zoom changes the scale with the
-and+buttons.
The document remains a vertical stack of physical pages. New projects use A4 by default, except in regions configured for Letter, such as the United States, Canada and Mexico. Changing between A4 and Letter redistributes the same content without making a copy or moving the cursor to another place.
Next to the project name, Plotic shows an estimated running time: one screenplay page is approximately one minute. Under the document, the timeline lets you move through pages without changing the screenplay's vertical order. Drag its control to another point, or select a coloured marker to jump to a Beat Board beat. The bar uses the order and beats already stored in the project; it does not create a second structure.
Scene numbers and production
In Settings > Page, choose paper format and whether scene numbers appear on the left, right, both sides or nowhere.
In Settings > Production, choose between flexible writing numbers and fixed production numbering. The same section handles revision colors and omitting a sequence in production mode.
Project documents
The left sidebar contains the project's Title page, Synopsis, Treatment and Screenplay. The title page holds the title, credit, authors, source, contact details and draft. Synopsis and treatment support headings, bold, italic and lists.
In Treatment, choose Create structure from screenplay to make an editable section for every scene heading. Its heading and number follow screenplay edits and reordering, while the treatment text remains yours. Omitted scenes are marked but excluded from the treatment PDF. If you delete a scene that has treatment text, its section is archived so the text is not lost.
AI analysis
The left sidebar includes Analysis. First configure your own provider in Account → Artificial intelligence, then see AI analysis for each mode and how to use the results.
Export
Use Export at the bottom of the left sidebar. Choose the document to download and Plotic creates a PDF. A screenplay export can include the title page and can use bold scene headings. Plotic does not print directly: print from your PDF reader if needed.
You can also choose Final Draft (.fdx) to send the screenplay and title page to Final Draft. It does not include the synopsis, treatment, profiles, comments, collaborators, or history. Pagination can differ between applications.
Next: Projects and folders.
Production tags
Open Production tags in the sidebar. Select screenplay text and choose a category to create an element or reuse an existing one. Each element has an optional general note, and each occurrence has optional production instructions. Search, filter by category or scene, and click an occurrence to navigate to its text.
Highlights can be hidden and are not printed in the screenplay. Removing an occurrence keeps the element available for reuse. Deleting an element removes all its tags while keeping screenplay text. Tags save offline and sync with the project.
The .plotic archive preserves categories, elements, occurrences and instructions. FDX support is provisional: it transfers only the category and element catalog through TagData; occurrences and instructions are not transferred. Interoperability with Final Draft has not yet been validated using a real tagged file.
On phones and tablets
Below 1024 px, documents open in a continuous reading view that fits the screen. Select and copy text without opening the keyboard. Choose Edit for corrections and Done to return to reading. The editing toolbar provides every block type, undo and redo without keyboard shortcuts.
Scenes and documents opens navigation. Choosing a scene takes you to its text; Tools > Scene details opens its profile. Characters, locations, comments, analysis, production tags, versions and exports remain available according to project permissions. Closing a panel preserves its form drafts. Comments require a connection.
Tools > Page preview shows the Letter/A4 layout in read-only mode. Back to document restores the continuous view's position and selection. Dual dialogue appears as consecutive labelled blocks; the paginated view and PDF keep its two columns. Screen width does not change PDF pagination.
Install on your phone
- On iPhone/iPad, open Plotic in Safari, use Share > Add to Home Screen and enable Open as Web App if offered.
- On Android, open Plotic in Chrome and choose Install app or Add to Home screen in its menu.
Installation depends on the browser. Open Plotic online and open each project before needing it offline. Local writing works offline; cloud synchronization resumes when you return to the app with a connection, and background synchronization is not guaranteed. Local projects belong to that device and browser context. Installing the PWA does not automatically transfer projects from another device or guarantee shared storage with the browser: use cloud projects or export a .plotic copy. Local storage is not a backup.
